How do you clean black ball point pen off of painted wood furniture?

My 2 year old son “decorated” his sisters dresser with black ball point pen. I have tried goo gone (nothing) and goof off (it took the paint off).
Any other suggestions.

strip it, sand the pen out then re-finish
